Chautauqua County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the population was 139,750. Its name may be a contraction of a Seneca Indian word meaning "where the fish was taken out" (but this is controversial, and there are numerous other theories). Its county seat is Mayville.
